Chapter History & Founders

Preparations for the Xi Xi Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. began nearly seven years before its founding when Soror Jennis Watson moved to Southern New York for graduate school. In the intervening years, the Northeast Region of the Sorority experienced a high rate of growth and, by 2009, it became clear that there was a need for a second Graduate, Alumnae, and Professional (GAP) chapter in the region.

Soror Dara Monasch, a graduate of Ramapo College of New Jersey where she co-founded the Alpha Theta Chapter, desired to remain closely connected with her chapter of initiation. She began speaking with Soror Watson about the creation of a GAP colony based out of Northern New Jersey.

In December 2010, Soror Watson invited a core group of women to come together in forming a new GAP colony. Sorors Wendy Hartmann, Danielle Smith-Scott, and Charys Patmore answered the call, followed closely by Sorors Patrice Turenne, Larissa Forik and Lorraine Negron. At the same time, Soror Hartmann was in talks with two women from her chapter of initiation, Sorors Maria Ruppert and Caitlin Bassett, to become part of the core group. And, Soror Monasch was concurrently speaking with Soror Miriam Musco for the same purpose.

These charter members formulated a detailed plan of action to achieve chapterhood and, on February 5, 2011, the Lower Hudson Valley GAP colony was founded. As a result of the intentional planning of the founding members, the colony chartered just three weeks later and, on February 27, 2011, the Xi Xi Chapter of Theta Nu Xi Multicultural Sorority, Inc. was established.
